Srinagar: The Happy City of the sun

The name Srinagar means 'The Happy City of the

Beauty and Knowledge" because for centuries it was one of the great cultural & philosophical centers of Asia, the ancient capital of Srinagar was founded under the great Buddhist Emperor Ashoka during the 3rd century B.C. the town we know today was founded in the 6th century A.D. by king Prawarasena Il and was known as Prawarasena or Pravapura.

With its almost medieval charm, the city of Srinagar has sight, smells and sounds to enchant the most Faded traveller. Its labyrinthine roads and bustling bazar are a photographers delight. A Mughal fort, Developed to its full sizw in the 17th century by an Afghan governer Atta Mhd Khan around and a top Kohi Maran, Hari Parbat, dominates the city Sprawling southward from the

centuries, Srinagar has for long been kashmir's most important commercial town, Boats have been a primary means of conveyance in Kashmir in the past. That is how the city forms around the banks of rivers Jhelum. Over a dozen bridges span the river. some important bridges providing a wonderful river view are zero bridges Amira Kadal, Badshah Kadal, Nawa Kadal and Safa Kadal. Kadal being the Kashmiri world for bridge. The view from any of the city bridges is unmistakably Kashmiri. Old bricks building line the banks. The distinctive pagoda like roof of a mosque or a shrine enlivens the horizon. In the warers of the river Jhelum, a straggling row of doongas flank the edges.

Srinagar is spread on the both sides of the river Jhelum . the largest city in th J & K  state and is Summer capital of the state , Srinagar is famous for its green meadows, beautiful lakes, one of the largest and famous river 'Jhelum' passes throught it in the middle channels, hotels, house boats, delightful Mughal Gardens, Deep Green rice fields and fruits Gardens. The city of srinagar is also very famous for its kashmir Handicrafts and Shawls.

A visit to bakery shop Kashmir has a cariety of breads seldom seen elsewhere. Tost, Tsochvors, Lavas, Baqurkhani, kulcha are some of the varieties. They are washed down wuth Noon Chai, Hard boiled salt tea ot Oahwa, sweet tea, poured from fuming 'Samavara'.

Dal Lake

In fact Srinagar, the summer capital of Kashmir would cease to attract many tourist without its trinity of lakes, the Dal-Lake which is itself combination of three lakes, Gagribal Lokut Dal and Bud Dal, The Nagin Lake and Anchar lake. They have inspired Mughals laid out terraced gardens along the banks of the Dal nearly 400 years ago. A cruis through the lake on a moonlit night can be the same sort of romantic and excitable an experience as the Mughal emperors and Empresses exclusivelyenjoyed centuries back. The Dal lake lies to the east of Srinagar at the foot of Zebrawan Mountain. From the lake one can see the historic Shankracharya Hill on the eastern side and the Hazaratbal on the west. The lake is eight km long and four km wide and is connected to a network of canals and to the river virtually the main through fare for boats, it is Jhelum. A lot of sight seeing and cruising can be done via the Dal. you glide past beautiful floating gardens in a colourful shikara across the lotus blooms and the enchanting island of 'Char Chinar' which Drives its name from the four Gaint plane Chinar trees, you can stop a while for a glimpse of the famous Hazratbal Shrine. this lake procides the visitable with a splendid view of the endless houseboats moored to the cool bank of the Dal, which almost take on the book of an unsubstantial fairy kingdom on a misty morning. Sometimes the Dal looks like the city's a quartic plaza with its scores of 'Shikaras' laden with fruits, flowers and other merchandise.

On a small island on the lake is the Nehru park a crowded and popular spot. At night when a thousands light blaza around it. The 'Gagribal point' looks very attractive.

The heart of the Kashmir is known a Srinagar. The heart of the Srinagar known as Dal-Lake because of its beauty. The Dal lake is not famous only in India but is very famous all over the worls. The Boulevard Road lies on left bank of the Dal-Lake, where are so many hotels, shopping complexes of Kashmir arts, restaurants, all the Mughal gardens are lies on the one sides of the lake.

 

The beauriful lake is 2.50 km from Lal Chowk.
